William Halsey Wood papers, 1875-1897.

Papers and correspondence, 1875-1897. Most of the correspondence consists of letters to his fianceĢe, Florence Helmsley, in Tannersville (N.Y.), written during the months leading up to their marriage late in 1889. There are also a few letters from her, and one letter from her mother, Emily Helmsley. He writes of plans for their house and their wedding; his work on Peddie Memorial (First Baptist Church of Newark); his plans for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan, which ultimately was built to plans by other architects; other church architecture projects; and a meeting with Andrew Carnegie. The collection also contains several letters written by various family members in 1897, describing his final illness and death, as well as some letters of condolence. There are several photographs of his house, showing both exterior and interior views; a few portrait photographs of him; two sketchbooks, one dated 1875-1876, the other dated 1881 and containing sketches of buildings in Europe; a scrapbook about him; two copies of "Jerusalem the golden," his description of his plan for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine; a copy of "Memories of William Halsey Wood, written by his wife"; various clippings and ephemera related to his work; and a typescript of a 1971 M.A. thesis by R. Craig Miller, entitled "The domestic architecture of William Halsey Wood".
